What is a pension?
So whether you are a company director, self-employed or working for an employer who doesn’t provide you with a pension, you are going to need a regular income in your retirement. And probably quite a lot more than you realise. The most effective way to provide yourself with a retirement income is through a pension. It is the simplest, easiest and most tax-efficient way of trying to ensure your own financial independence during your retirement.
I qualify for a state pension do I need a private pension?
The state pension is a good service provide by the government but for a lot of people the funds provided are too little for them to live on. €248.30 is the current weekly rate of the state pension, if you feel like you would need more than that cover bills, food, travel etc. then a private pension would allow you to top that amount up.
Why start a pension plan now?
When you are young, it’s all too easy to think that old age and retirement are so far away in the future that you don’t need to bother about them now. Yet, the earlier you start your pension plan, the less it will cost you to build up the pension that you will need. That’s because the longer your money is invested, the more chance it will have to grow - so the amounts that you pay in during the early years have the potential to build up much more than the amounts that you pay in later.
How much will I need when I retire?
Everyone’s expectations and lifestyle requirements are different. However, many experts say that you should aim for a retirement income of around two-thirds of your annual earnings shortly before retirement. That is a good rule of thumb, but it’s not necessarily right for everybody.
Any other benefits?
If you make a contribution to a Pension you can benefit from Income Tax relief (subject to Revenue limits). The tax relief you receive reduces the real cost of the contribution you make to the plan. So, if we take the two simple examples opposite we can see that a ‘gross’ Pension contribution of €100 may only have a ‘net’ cost of €59 for someone who is in the 41% tax band or €80 for someone in the 20% tax band. Therefore, the government is giving you extra to help provide for your retirement.
